Born at Sunbury, Victoria, Australia
He was the son of John and Esther Gilchrist, of 193, Rathmines St., Fairfield, Victoria.
Height 5” 8” Tall, Weighed 10 st 8lbs, He had blue eyes and dark Brown hair.
He enlisted at Sunbury Victoria on 22nd July 1915. He was 20 years and 5 Months old and his profession was a carpenter.
16th August 1915 he was allocated to E Company, 8th Depot Battalion, Flemington.
16th September 1915 at Broadmeadows he was transferred to the 11th Reinforcements for 8th Battalion.
11th October 1915 he embarked at Melbourne on the “Nestor.”
7th January 1916 he joined the reinforcements at Tel-el-Kebir.
18th March 1916 He was taken to the Field Ambulance with a fever but rejoined the 8th battalion the same day.
26th March 1916 He left Alexandria for Europe.
31st March 1916 he disembarked at Marseilles.
He was killed in action on 24th June 1916, he was 21 years old.
He is buried in Berks Cemetery Extension (Rosenberg Plateau Plots), Ploegsteert.
