Food Shortages?

This little article appeared in the Eastbourne Gazette on 19th August 1914. It is interesting how the newspaper prepared the public for the food shortages ahead.
To say that supplies from Germany and Denmark were cut off is perhaps an understatement as England was now at war with them!


FOOD SUPPLIES – FACTS FOR EASTBOURNE HOUSEHOLDERS

Supplies of butter and eggs from Germany, Russia and Denmark are cut off. In ordinary times 100,000 cwts. Of butter is imported every week from Denmark and Russia. Supplies of New Zealand and Australian butter begin in October and end in May.

Russia, a large sugar producing country can send nothing at present. The German and Austrian beet used by English refiners is no longer available. The chief sources of sugar supply now available are Cuba and the British West Indies; but the United States have the first call on Cuba. Probably the English refiners have already sold more sugar than they can manufacture with the stock of beet available.
